Returns & Exchange
All wine sales are final
All wine and sparkling wine purchased from Burgdy are non-returnable and non-refundable. This includes every bottle we sell — young releases, library vintages, magnums, and gift sets. Once your order is confirmed and payment is processed, the sale is final.
Wine is a perishable agricultural product whose condition can change over time. We cannot verify how a bottle has been stored, handled, or opened after it leaves our care. For these reasons, we do not accept returns, exchanges, or cancellations based on taste preference, vintage variation, or bottle condition discovered after delivery.
By placing an order, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to this policy.
Inherent risks of buying wine
Every bottle of wine carries inherent risks that are normal in the trade and beyond any retailer’s control. You accept these risks when you purchase. They include, but are not limited to:
- Cork taint (TCA) — A musty, damp-cardboard aroma and flat flavor caused by a compound sometimes present in natural cork or the winery environment. Industry estimates suggest that roughly 2–7% of cork-sealed bottles may be affected. A corked bottle is not a defect in how we stored or shipped the wine.
- Oxidation — Exposure to oxygen over time can cause browning in whites, loss of freshness, and nutty or sherry-like notes in reds. Risk increases with bottle age and storage history before purchase.
- Bottle variation — Even wines from the same case and vintage can taste different due to cork permeability, micro-oxygenation, and natural variation in the wine itself.
- Sediment — Older reds and unfiltered wines may throw harmless tartrate crystals or grape sediment. This is expected, not a flaw.
- Ullage (fill level) — The wine level in the neck may be slightly lower on older bottles due to natural evaporation through the cork. Minor ullage is common on aged wine.
- Label condition — Scuffs, fading, or minor damage from cellaring and transport are common on older stock and do not affect the wine inside.
None of the conditions above qualify for a return or refund once the bottle has been delivered to you.
Older & vintage wines
The risks described above increase significantly with age. Burgdy offers library vintages and mature bottles for collectors and enthusiasts. If you purchase a wine that is more than a few years past its release vintage, you should assume elevated risk of:
- Cork failure or cork taint
- Oxidation and diminished fruit
- Variation in how the wine shows on any given day
- Lower fill levels and cosmetic label wear
We describe provenance and storage to the best of our knowledge, but we cannot guarantee how any aged bottle will perform when opened. Mature wine is sold as-is. We strongly recommend researching the vintage, producer, and typical drinking window before purchasing older stock.
There are no exceptions to our final-sale policy based on the age of the wine. The older the bottle, the greater the risk you accept at checkout.
Champagne & sparkling wine
Champagne and other traditional-method sparkling wines carry additional risks:
- Cork pressure — Sparkling wine is under significant pressure. Corks can be difficult to remove; improper opening can waste the bottle. We are not responsible for loss due to opening technique.
- Dosage and age — Older Champagne may show toasted, oxidative, or evolved character that is intentional for its age. This is not grounds for return.
- Disgorgement dates — Late-disgorged or aged-on-lees bottlings evolve differently from young releases. Flavor profiles can surprise even experienced drinkers.
- Cork taint — Sparkling wines sealed with cork are equally susceptible to TCA. A flat or musty Champagne is an accepted industry risk, not a returnable defect.
Vintage Champagne and aged cuvées are among the highest-risk categories we sell. Purchase only if you are comfortable with these uncertainties.
What we may help with
While wine sales are final, we stand behind accurate fulfillment. Contact us within 48 hours of delivery at service@burgdy.com if:
- Your shipment arrives with broken or leaking bottles caused in transit
- You received the wrong wine or a missing item from your order
- The package shows clear carrier damage (crushed box, visible impact)
Please include your order number and clear photos of the outer packaging, shipping label, and affected bottles. We will review eligible claims and, at our discretion, offer a replacement or credit for confirmed fulfillment errors or transit damage — not for cork taint, oxidation, or other inherent wine risks after intact delivery.
Claims must be reported within 48 hours of the carrier’s delivery scan. We cannot assist with issues reported after that window or after bottles have been opened, except where required by applicable law.
Cancellations
Orders may be cancelled only if we have not yet begun processing or allocating inventory. Once an order enters fulfillment, it cannot be cancelled. Contact us immediately if you need to request a cancellation.
Questions
If you are unsure whether a wine suits your palate, cellar plans, or risk tolerance — especially for older vintages or Champagne — contact us before ordering. We are happy to share guidance, but all sales remain final once placed.
